The restraint of Japanese basket design may mislead the uninitiated to believe that the art is simple. In truth, mastering the art demands years of training. The weaving of a single basket can take months of meticulous labor, from the deliberation over the design through the selection of raw materials and the complex plaiting and finishing processes. While bamboo baskets have served various utilitarian functions in Japanese daily life for centuries, they have also been valued for their beauty.

This flower basket is signed by the artist Jin Morigami. Born to bamboo artisans, Morigami achieved recognition as an artist from a young age and enjoys popularity among Western collectors. His pieces are part of the collections of the Asian Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, and the Museum of Art and Design (New York), among others. A plastic watertight cylinder fits snugly inside the basket so that flowers can be displayed; the cylinder can be removed for easy care.
