This paperwork takes the form of a tsuba, the round guard that protects the hand when gripping a Japanese bladed weapon.  Originally more functional than decorative, during the Edo period (1603-1868) more elaborate and ornamental tsuba were used to signify wealth and rank. In the same era, chrysanthemums from China were bred and developed into distinctly Japanese varieties.  As a symbol of longevity and power, the lobed chrysanthemum was a natural choice for a tsuba motif.
