An Ren’s designs, known for their whimsical color, prints and textures, have been called “wearable and “art couture.”
Ren is the youngest child of Ren Weiyin a famous Chinese painter and writer whose studio was shut down by authorities when An Ren was three years old. The entire family was sent to a “re-education camp.” After they escaped and returned to Shanghai, Ren Weiyin was forbidden to paint and told to repair shoes. He repaired shoes six days a week and on the seventh he painted.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, the family endured extreme poverty and hardship, but the irrepressible An Ren created her own dolls and toys from discards. In the 1980s Ren Weiyin was pronounced rehabilitated and An Ren traveled to New York to stay with relatives to work in a sewing factory and a restaurant while attending the Fashion Institute of Technology.
