The Melt Scarf The Melt Scarf

In this reproduction of artist Tsherin Sherpa’s 2017 painting The Melt, the metamorphosis of the wrathful Buddhist deity Mahakala Bernag Chen is part of Sherpa’s exploration of the role of traditional Himalayan Buddhist imagery in our contemporary world.

The swirl of vibrant colors melting into the shimmering formlessness of a golden background is, in fact, Mahakala. At the painting’s center is a dark blue patch, whose depths reveal three eyes and a fanged mouth, as if the deity is amazed at his extraordinary transformation.
