2023 CHAO SHAO-AN WALL CALENDAR

Chao Shao-an’s fluid brushwork, vibrant colors, and inventive compositions drive the exquisite flower, bird, animal, and insect paintings for which he is revered. Chao came of age just after the fall of China’s last imperial dynasty. Along with the founders of the Lignan school, he sought to revitalize Chinese art and refresh artistic connections with nature. He looked to the West for inspiration, all the while honoring ancient Chinese heritage. Ultimately, Chao became a leader in his homeland’s modernist art movement. His style is loose and expressive yet grounded by such symbolism as frogs for good fortune, plum blossoms for perseverance, and cranes for longevity and human wisdom. Twelve of Chao’s masterful paintings adorn this calendar, a selection taken from his nearly 80-year career.
