Nandi Figurine

This glass figurine is based on a beloved masterpiece in the Asian Art Museum collection: the 15th-century granite sculpture of the bull Nandi, faithful mount of the Hindu deity Shiva. Usually placed in front of the main sanctuary of a temple to Shiva, the massive sculpture would have been adorned with real flowers and fabrics; the garlands, bells, and blankets are rendered subtly here in glass.
