The Kohbar Ghar, or the nuptial chamber, is the room in which traditionally been done in the Maithil culture to bless a newlywed couple. The dominant theme is pond life, with symbols representing love, prosperity, fertility and the proliferation of life. The bamboo tree represents the male sex and the ring of lotus is a symbol of the female sex. The Sun God and the Moon God shower their blessings on the newlyweds, while lovebirds in the paintings chatter about the ever-growing love between the couple.

The tradition was that the newly married bride and groom would spend three nights in the Kohbar Ghar without cohabiting. On the fourth night they would consummate the marriage surrounded with the colorful painting.
