Samurai Puzzle

This puzzle is reproduction of Utagawa Kunisada I’s woodblock print Actors Ichikawa Danjūrō VIII as Inuzuka Shino Moritaka (R) and Bandō Hikosaburō IV as Inukai Genpachi Nobumichi (L), from about 1850. The scene was taken from the 106-volume“Tale of the Eight Dog Heroes of Satomi” (1814–1842), Japanese author Bakin’s popular tale of eight samurai use sword-fighting, magic and strategy to defeat the enemies of the Satomi clan. Artists such as Kunisada based woodblock print designs on scenes from the novel and the ensuing Kabuki plays. The prints highlight the many poses, expressions and vibrant costumes of the beloved story.
