An Ren is a New York-based designer whose well-known sophisticated creations are feminine, whimsical, fun and flattering and feature unique combinations of prints, colors, textures and fabrics and finely crafted details with a rare quality of workmanship. Her designs have been called “wearable art,” “artworks in fabrics” and “art couture.” Numerous celebrities wear An Ren and her signature jackets and coats have been often featured in films and television. An Ren was born in Shanghai, the youngest of three children. Her father was the very highly regarded and famous painter and writer Ren Weiyin.
Throughout the 1960s and 70s An, with all her family, endured extreme hardship and many humiliations. During these hard times when the family was named as “enemies of the nation,” An Ren nonetheless always believed somehow one day life would give her a chance to realize her dreams. In 1987 she came to New York City to live with her other relatives. In the 1980s when a Chinese person came to New York there were typically only two jobs available: to work in a Chinese restaurant or a sewing factory. An Ren did both. She also attended FIT. Within a short time, she realized none of these things would help her realize her dreams. After patiently working a few years for other designers, An Ren launched her own line and hasn’t looked back.
