The black hat dance, or zhana nga cham, aka Shanag, symbolizes celebrating successful liberation, subjugation of evil, and the victory of good over evil. The headdress is associated with the legend of the ruthless Tibetan king, Langdarma, who destroyed numerous monasteries and executed Buddhist nuns and monks. It is believed that a Buddhist monk and practitioner of Tantric arts named Lhalung Pelgyi Dorje performed a cham in front of the king with a bow and arrow hidden in his costume and stuck him with an arrow ending his evil rule.
